Boston area-based EnerTrac provides low cost/low data rate smart metering technology to a variety of vertical markets including Propane and Oil fuel dealers, Lubricant dealers, Waste Pump monitoring and Sprinkler leak detection. EnerTrac smart sensors allow fuel distributors to electronically monitor the amount of fuel in a tank and optimize deliveries while minimizing run-outs.  The sensors send RF information over the Internet to a software-as-a-service interface that integrates into dealers ERP systems. This allows business owners to make their delivery methods more efficient.

Despite that huge potential market, tank monitoring had been limited until recently. Monitoring technology has always been prohibitively expensive. As a result, home fuel dealers have been using sensors on less than 1% of their tanks.

Founded in 2006, EnerTrac is pursuing a “Monitor on every tank” strategy. EnerTrac is focusing on this SaaS based model as its main source of revenue, rather than the hardware sales. The company has developed a sensor inexpensive enough that a business owner can put one on every tank. The company charges just $30 upfront and less than $3 per month to monitor each tank.
